MTV’s revival of its late but great Total Request Live, TRL, is set to air Monday, Oct. 2rd, from its original home in New York Time Square. Having almost been a decade since its departure in 2008, TRL is getting a major image revamp, and bringing in many popular faces from social media to add a bit of spice.
The next generation is making headway, and the elites in entertainment and fashion have taken notice. In a very short amount of time, young people have seen great success and stardom from online platforms like Youtube, Vine and Instagram. In the age of instant gratification and technology, a few young people have navigated their way to hollywood lights and global fame using these outlets.
Its no surprise TRL is looking to these platforms and recruiting the best of them to add to their team. Adding the internet famous will help push their brand to younger generations and keep them wanting more.
MTV has been promoting their reboot of TRL all summer. Back in the day it was popular for its music videos, youth culture and famous guest appearances. With its relaunch, it will take on more or less the same structure, of course adding social media to the mix.
TRL has been reveal cast members since its revival announcement. The most recent reveal are the Dolan Twins, who first saw fame through the late but great Vine. Much like their fellow costars, they have an impressive online following of over 4 million individually across all their social media accounts.
The 5 main hosts were the first to be named. Lawrence Jackson, a journalist, actor, producer and TV/ radio personality. Tamara Dhia, a writer, producer and host. Erik Zachary, a national on-air radio host. Amy Pham, actress and TV host. And John Whitfield, better known as his online persona D.C. Young Fly. Thanks to his online popularity he is a rapper, actor, comedian and has been a regular face on Nick Cannon’s Wild ‘n Out.
TRL topped off their cast by adding Gigi Gorgeous, Eva Gutowski, and Gabbie Hanna as their social media correspondents. All three of them are highly popular online.
The world of the rich and famous is changing quickly and everyone is taking notice. It seems like having an online fanbase is a must have on your resume.
Who will be the first guest on TRL? Will it make a lasting impression and stick around? who knows but it’s exciting.
